Things to know before you apply for a study permit

  1. Scholarship: refers to financial support which is granted to student from universities and training centers and there is no need to repay the amount.
  2. Loan: it is a kind of financial support which is paid to university from a bank or a private facility and is used for tuition and fees. Applicant will need a guarantor who is residing in the located country for obtaining this type of loan.
  3. Research assistant: applicant helps professors in writing articles and conducting research as an assistant.
  4. Fellowship: Research position for a certain duration mostly with a salary.

    Application processing time depends on the time and the country you apply from.

    The application processing fee for study permit is $150 CAD. Residents of most countries need to provide biometric as part of their application. The biometric fee is $85 CAD.

    Canadian Study permit is valid for the duration of your study or until the expiry date of your passport.

    Reasons of study permit refusal:

    Some of the most common reasons for study permit refusals are the followings:

    1. No family ties to Canada and country of residence.

    Note: International graduates of college programs offered through a public-private curriculum licensing agreement will no longer qualify for a post-graduation work permit.

    If the student is married or has partner, their spouse/ partner is eligible to apply for an open work permit and work full-time in Canada during the time they have study permit and post-graduation work permit. This policy is limited to master and PHD students only.

    PGWP is issued based on the length of the study program for a minimum of 8 months to a maximum of 3 years.
